OBM, CLINICAL PRACTICE, AND APPLIED RESEARCH

You Can Have Your Cake and Eat It Too!

Over the years, I have received hundreds of inquiries from students and BCBAs about “transferring” from the clinical realm to OBM. Although it is rare to find an OBM job posting, it is entirely possible to be an OBMer without quitting your day job…  and our field can’t afford to lose good clinicians! Behavior analysis has categorized our discipline using five domains, but that doesn’t mean one must choose and faithfully practice within a single framework. This talk will use a case study to reveal how one can become a more valuable commodity by combining domain-specific techniques into a “super-system” position. Various tools, methods and perspectives, as well as multi-level outcome graphs, will be shared to demonstrate how it is beneficial to connect-the-effectiveness-dots at the individual/client level, organizational level and funding agent level.

OBM IN HUMAN SERVICE SETTINGS

So, You’ve Written the Perfect Behavior Plan…Now What?

Being a professional behavior analyst is hard! For many of us, rather than just providing direct services, the behavior analyst plays a consultative role, supporting teachers, staff, parents, and other caregivers in the development and implementation of the behavior plan.  In addition, many behavior analysts lead other professional behavior analysts, providing direct supervision for those seeking certification, or managing their work as a member of the management team.   In order to maximize the effectiveness of the proposed intervention, the behavior analyst must be able to develop and maintain behavior-change repertoires in those responsible for the individual’s plan. This presentation will review the literature on Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) applications specific to human service settings, present some personal examples of OBM strategies the author has used in various settings, and address the implications of OBM in effective behavior analytic supervision.

OBM ACROSS CULTURES AND GENERATIONS

How Many Ways Can You Say Behavior?

Cultural norms can be simply defined as a pattern of behaviors of specific groups. These behavior patterns are learned from parents, teachers, peers, and the larger society – what can be considered “the traditional culture.” In addition, Generational values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors are becoming as commonly accepted and increasingly talked about as a sub-culture, or “the generational culture.”  In some cases the two cultures work together quite well.  However, in other situations conflict arises, resulting in quite a conundrum for those interested in behavior change such as parents, teachers, employers and large organizations.  For the Behavior Analyst, these cultures present quite a challenge.  As the practitioner stewards his or her work to make a positive difference in the lives of people, the culture and sub-culture is ever present whether it is in the classroom or the boardroom.   By having an understanding of cultural norms before we begin behavior analytic interventions, the behavior analyst becomes armed with a more precise understanding of what will be reinforced versus punished, what will be tolerated versus rejected, and what behaviors will sustain versus fall to extinction.  This talk will use case examples from various parts of the world where one OBM practitioner (the presenter) has applied OBM, the trials and tribulations of implementation, and offers suggestions on how the behavior analyst can apply OBM to his or her work, and ways to understand and attend to Traditional or Generational Cultures.
